THE BEDROCK OF AN ENDURING MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP
I am delighted to welcome you to this very exciting column this month. In the month of January, I shared with you the path to self-discovery. In this write-up, I intend to build on that for an enduring impact. The common question that the singles often ask one another today is “Are you into any relationship?” And they are very passionate and emotional about it. It is like a consuming question. It is the adolescent fad today to be into a serious godly relationship with an opposite sex with the sole intention of getting married to the person in the future. When a single is into a relationship, it is believed to be a big achievement, and of course yes, it is. In this column, I intend to discuss one of the salient requirements that are needed to have a lasting godly relationship after you have been saved. Join me as we coast on in this very important voyage.
To have an enduring relationship with men, you must first develop a close and personal fellowship with God. Absence of God in your relationship will give you a godless, meaningless, and rudderless relationship. It is the spiritual that controls the physical. You will recall that the worlds were formed by the Word of the Invisible God- Hebrews 11:3. Before a marriage is formed on the earth, it has already been created in the spiritual realm. The spiritual is the realm of the spirits. Just as the devil can manipulate the spiritual realm against those who are his, God is always there to control the same realm in our favour. That is why the Bible says, “A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven- John 3:27. The Message Bible says, It’s not possible for a person to succeed-I’m talking about eternal success-without heaven’s help. Jeremiah 10:23 says, O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
Even though we are not created as robots, indisputably, we are not created to act independently without the guidance and the leading of the Lord. So, it is not given to man to direct his steps. Why? Man is limited, but God is limitless. Man is finite, but God is infinite. Man is exhaustible, but God is inexhaustible. Man is a creature, but God is the Creator. Man is weak, but God is Strong. Man is foolish, but God is the Only Wise God. Man is mortal, but God is immortal. Man is visible, but God is invisible. Man is earthly, but God is Heavenly. Man is human, but God is a Spirit. For you to have a good and enduring relationship with man on earth, first, you need to have a good, workable, and lasting relationship with God.
Many Christians are satisfied with corporate fellowship with God by attending regular Church services in line with Heb.10:25 and Acts 2:42. Some are satisfied with family altar. All these are not enough. You must devote some time to fellowship with God personally and regularly. Corporate fellowship or family altar is good but no believer will make spiritual advancement without having times to personally fellowship with God and know God one on one. For you to do exploit in marriage, you need to know the ways of God. He needs to reveal the mystery and the sacredness of marriage to you. You need to know His idea of marriage and the consequences of the violation of His Words.
Issues of marriage relationship are not for the ungodly, baby, carnal and the immature Christians. They are serious issues for the mature, strong and spiritually-minded people. They are for those who have learnt how to discern the things of God. In I Cor. 2: 14-15, we are told that the natural man cannot receive spiritual things unless he becomes spiritual. To become spiritual after salvation is to develop a personal fellowship with God through regular prayers, worshipping and studying of God’s Word. The following are some of the signs that show that you are spiritually immature to have a lasting marriage relationship:
If you cannot discern the voice of God from the voice of the devil.
If you cannot differentiate your voice or thought from the voice of the devil.
If you don’t know how to receive God’s direction.
If you cannot discern spiritual things.
If you don’t know God’s will for your life.
If spiritual things are foolishness to you.
If you are still feeding on the milk of God’s Word when you are expected to be feeding on the bones.
If you are full of carnalities.
If you manifest the works of the flesh instead of the fruit of the Spirit as stated in Galatians 5:19-24.
If you are not interested in spiritual issues, and your affections are earthly.
Marriage is God’s own idea and not man’s. You need to be spiritually mature to be involved in this enterprise in order to have access to the innumerable nuggets that marriage brings. Spiritual immaturity will make your relationship chaotic, wearisome and uneventful. Spiritual immaturity will make your relationship shallow, burdensome and mysterious. This is the foundation of marriage. However, you don’t have to be a spiritual giant to enjoy the bliss of marriage relationship. Get connected to the God of marriage today with regular fellowship and deep intimacy, and He will launch you into the inexhaustible joy of marriage with astonishing and amazing experiences.
