Welcome to the June edition of The Singles’ World. In the last edition, I discussed peer influence and modern culture as major contributors to the prevalence of infidelity in society today, in addition to the other causes previously examined. The Bible expressly forbids adultery, yet it has become a common sin among both Christians and unbelievers. Sadly, those who ought to be the light of the world have become entangled in the very sin that should characterise only the ungodly. Consequently, many Christian marriages are collapsing, while children from such broken homes are left to endure deep emotional and psychological trauma. This also gives unbelievers an opportunity to ridicule our God and discredit the message we preach. This teaching is therefore necessary to remind us of the importance of shunning every form of infidelity so that we may enjoy God’s purpose for marriage. In this edition, I shall discuss another major cause of infidelity. It is my prayer that this teaching will be a blessing to every one of us, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Weakness
Behind every sin forbidden by God is a spiritual battle. From the Garden of Eden, the devil has sought to influence both believers and unbelievers to act contrary to the Word of God. Even when a person sincerely desires to obey God, Satan seeks to entice and deceive them into disobedience so that they may incur God’s judgement.
The disobedience of Adam and Eve was instigated by the serpent, a symbol of the devil. Samson, who possessed an extraordinary ministry of deliverance, was influenced into violating his Nazirite covenant. As a result, he lost both his ministry and his life. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, the Bible tells us that Satan provoked David to number Israel, bringing God’s judgement upon the nation. Likewise, Peter was influenced by Satan when he opposed the suffering and death of Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:23). Jesus rebuked Satan rather than Peter because He recognised the true source of Peter’s words. Judas Iscariot presents another example. Luke 22:3 tells us that Satan entered into him, leading him to betray the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Scriptures contain numerous examples demonstrating that Satan is the instigator of sin. Human beings become his instruments when they yield to his influence, and whether they obey or resist depends largely upon their spiritual condition. This is why 1 John 3:8 declares, “He that committeth sin is of the devil.” Satan’s chief objective is to oppose the Word of God and to lead people into rebellion against Him. Sexual immorality is no exception.
From my understanding of demonology, sexual sins such as fornication, adultery, uncleanness, homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, rape, and incest are often fuelled by demonic powers, particularly those commonly described as marine spirits. When such sins are committed, spiritual bonds may be formed that place individuals under demonic oppression and bondage. For this reason, the devil relentlessly targets Christian marriages, and infidelity has become one of his most effective weapons for wreaking havoc in Christian homes.
A decline in one’s prayer life and personal devotion leads to moral vulnerability (Galatians 5:16). When you become spiritually weak, your spiritual sensitivity is diminished. Your ability to recognize temptation and discern the warning signs of infidelity becomes impaired. Spiritual weakness therefore leaves many Christians vulnerable to adultery.
Many Christian men and women were spiritually vibrant while they were single but gradually became spiritually cold after marriage. Others remained spiritually strong for a time before becoming lukewarm through the pressures of life. Common excuses include heavy workloads, busyness, family responsibilities, workplace pressures, and stress. Yet none of these justifies neglecting our relationship with God.
When personal prayer and Bible study become burdensome, when attending church services becomes optional, when serving in the church feels inconvenient, when you begin to sleep spiritually instead of remaining watchful, when you walk in the flesh rather than in the Spirit, when serving God becomes wearisome, and when eternity is no longer in view, you gradually become desensitized to sin. You may even begin to flirt with temptation without any sense of conviction. The devil is always looking for opportunities to attack believers when they are spiritually weak (2 Samuel 17:2). It is during such seasons of weakness that he seeks to ensnare God’s people through sexual immorality. This is why Jesus commanded us to “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41). Likewise, we are instructed to “be sober, be vigilant” (1 Peter 5:8). These are essential spiritual disciplines that help us resist the temptation of adultery. The battle against infidelity is not merely physical; it is profoundly spiritual.
Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers, while 2 Corinthians 10:4 teaches that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God. Christian couples must therefore remain spiritually alert and never allow the fire upon their altar to go out. When spiritual discernment is lost, deception becomes easy.
Instead of rebuking an agent of darkness sent to seduce you, or fleeing from a Delilah determined to destroy your spiritual strength, you may find yourself entertaining the very temptation you should resist. Spiritual weakness makes a believer an easy target for the enemy.
May the Lord renew your strength so that you will not grow weary. Every doorway that spiritual weakness has opened for the spirit of sexual immorality to attack your marriage is closed in the name of Jesus Christ. I bind every spirit of infidelity and sexual immorality operating in your home, in the name of Jesus Christ. Every ungodly spiritual bond established through sexual immorality between you and the kingdom of darkness is broken in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. By the grace of God, we will continue from here next month. Please do not forget to send me your comments and testimonies. If you are not born again, please surrender your life to Jesus Christ today. Tomorrow may be too late. Until then, God bless you. Amen.
