GIANT OF AFRICA
“IF I HAD SEEN FARTHER THAN OTHERS THAT’S BECAUSE I WAS STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF A GIANT” – ISSAC NEWTON
We all know what we mean when we use the word giant, it means something very big, large compared to others, synonyms with the word giant are words like ‘immense’ ‘gigantic’ and ‘vast’
For a country to be seen as the giant as compared to the other countries, that country shouldn’t just have a large population size, but have large and efficient sectors such as health, political, educational and agricultural sectors to mention a few. In my own opinion the giant of Africa is a country with low crime, corruption and unemployment rate, a country with constant power, a country where her people go to the polling unit with the beliefs that their votes would count, a country where religion, ethnic group and tribe wouldn’t be a reason to or not to vote for a candidate.
This isn’t what is happening here, so I say it’s almost a complete misnomer to have named Nigeria the ‘GIANT OF AFRICA’
We do not have low crime or unemployment or corruption rate. Indonesia and Singapore has executed not less than 9 Nigerians for drug trafficking this year, recent research ranks us as the 4th most widespread use of marijuana in the world, Are we giants in crime? Transparency international ranks us the ‘136th’ least transparent in a ranking involving 175 countries with Botswana been 30th least transparent and least corrupt in Africa
Are we giants in epileptic power supply? Ghana had celebrated years of constant power while we haven’t even celebrated constant power of 12hours a day
Our educational system is so bad that the best university in Nigeria is the 20th best in Africa, and we are the acclaimed ‘giants’
Hey! I said “its almost a total misnomer” not a complete one because we have excelled in some areas though few, like the resounding success we had in curbing the Ebola virus very fast and in having the lowest possible deaths and also lot of survivors
Nollywood is the second largest industry in the world, the first in Africa, need I say much about our music and music videos, I think you all agree with me that we are the giants in entertainment we are also trying our best in football, FIFA ranks us the 7th best in Africa, not good for the giant but better than nothing
We are “yet” to be giants, yet because I am optimistic that one day this giant would rise and face its David again, but my realistic me asks would it really wake? When? How? Yes! It would but the when lies in the how and the how lies in the National anthem
Arise O! Compatriots. “The success of an organization depends on the efforts of the individuals in the organization”-Vince Lombardi.
Fellow compatriots we have neglected our duties for so long but not anymore, this is a call to us all
Arise o! Compatriots and let not the labour of our heroes past be in vain
